Frozen Hose

It’s Time to Disconnect Your Hoses for the Winter

Stay ahead of the freezing weather this year by taking care of your exterior pipes with Gold Seal Plumbing. It may still seem early to some of us to start preparing our house for the winter, but we are here to remind you to take care of your plumbing before it becomes a problem. The Inland Northwest is projected to get it’s first snow this week (in October?!), and now is the time to winterize.

We would recommend disconnecting hoses from outdoor faucets now to prepare for the upcoming cold snap. Whether you have a freeze/frost proof spigot or not, disconnecting your exterior watering hoses now could save you a world of trouble later. The reason is simple: when freezing weather hits, it’ll turn the water in the house to ice, backing up all the way through the spigot. When water turns to ice it expands, bursting the pipes on the other side of the spigot, aka inside the house. You are left with damage to the spigot or worse, water damage inside your home.

It is also important to turn off your inside water valve that controls the exterior sprinkler and spigot lines. This allows them to drain, preventing any leftover water from freezing in the cold months and causing problems inside the house. If this is a task you’d rather leave to professionals, we are just a call away from winterizing your house.

If interior pipes bursting or water leakage has been a problem for you in the past or is a worry for the future, we can help with that as well. One way that Gold Seal Plumbing offers protection for homes through the cold months is through the installation of a Honeywell Wi-Fi Water Leak and Freeze Detector. The peace of mind that this product offers is unparalleled, not to mention the ability to catch leakage early before it completely wrecks whatever is in the room along with flooring, trim, and drywall.

A Wi-Fi water leak and freeze detector product is perfect if you are worried about coming home from work or waking up in the morning to a surprise leak, or for snow birds that leave for the winter that want to ensure they do not come home to water damage in the spring. It is also an easy and low cost addition to any home: water damage can spread quickly just in the span of a work day. The water leak and freeze detector is a small scale way to know the instant there may be a problem with water or freeze damage.
